CANADA’S NEW FOOD GUIDE – Good news for Brown Rice!
Canada’s new food guide, released in January, embraces brown rice! Health Canada (HC) now advocates Canadians fill half their meal plate with fruits and vegetables; a quarter with whole grain foods (brown rice, quinoa, whole grain pasta); and a quarter with protein foods (lentils, nuts, tofu, lean meat, fish, low-fat dairy and cheeses). The food plate guide HC developed features brown rice.
Canadians are encouraged to eat whole foods; choose plant-based proteins over animal sources; and eat less processed foods (that are high in sugar, sodium and saturated fats). Fruit juice is out, water is in.
